- Composites
industry recovers faster than expected
- COMPOSITES
EUROPE 2010 again records more than 8,000 visitors
After two
difficult years, the European market for fibre-reinforced
plastics has noticeably recovered. The upswing in the sales
markets already led to an increase in composites production
by up to 25 per cent and to the opening up of new markets
this year. These impulses were also reflected at the
COMPOSITES EUROPE 2010 specialist fair in Essen. 294
exhibitors from 25 countries showcased technologies and
products from the entire value creation chain of fibre-reinforced
plastics. 8,101 visitors (previous event in Stuttgart 2009:
6,451, Essen 2008: 8,061) came to Essen where COMPOSITES
EUROPE was held simultaneously with the ALUMINIUM World
Trade Fair.
Industry recovering faster than
expected
The
production of fibre-reinforced plastics – most notably of
GRP and CFRP – is increasing noticeably gain. This is the
result of the European market report presented by the
specialist association AVK (Federation of Reinforced
Plastics) in Essen at its international conference during
COMPOSITES EUROPE. In 2010 GRP production in Europe rose by
1.015 million tons or app. 25 per cent compared to the
previous year. This means that the pre-crisis level of 2008
has almost been reached again. “The market for composites
will develop much better than was forecast even last year”,
says Dr. Elmar Witten, AVK Managing Director.
The
composites industry mirrors developments within its
application industries – most notably the recovery in the
transport and construction sector but also the growing
demand from the wind power industry. This boom is driven by
Germany, among others, where production grew at an above
average rate over the last year.
“The
composites industry has a large potential for innovation,
both with regard to products and to services and processes”,
says Dr. Elmar Witten. The important point will be, Witten
continues, to further promote the image and the profile of
fibre-reinforced plastics and to supply further evidence for
the sustainability of these materials.
Good prospects for the future
The visitors
at COMPOSITES EUROPE had a similarly positive view of the
business prospects, as was shown in a representative survey
conducted at the trade fair. 57 per cent of the visitors
interviewed rated the current economic situation in their
respective industries “good” to “very good”.
Even more
optimistic was the view of the future of those interviewed:
about 80 per cent expected the economic prospects for their
industry to improve significantly. This corresponds to the
expectations expressed by the exhibitors: 18 per cent rated
prospects “very good”, another 51 per cent “good”.
“COMPOSITES
EUROPE in combination with the International AVK Conference
once more proved to be the leading force in the German trade
fair market for fibre-reinforced plastics. Once again, the
trade fair was the source of important impulses for the
industry“, says Hans-Joachim Erbel, Managing Director of
Reed Exhibitions, Deutschland GmbH, the organiser of
COMPOSITES EUROPE.
One of this
year’s points of attraction at the fair was again the
Product Demonstration Area, where companies and research
institutions presented innovative products as well as
processing procedures and scientific research projects. The
spectrum of the special exhibition ranged from RTM live
demonstrations to automotive parts made of CFRP to new
material structures for application in the aviation sector.
COMPOSITES
EUROPE 2011 will take place in Stuttgart from 27 to 29
September.
About COMPOSITES EUROPE:
COMPOSITES
EUROPE – European Trade Fair & Forum for Composite
Materials, Technology and Applications was held for the
fifth time in 2010. It is organised by trade fair organiser
Reed Exhibitions in cooperation with the European industry
association EuCIA and the international specialist journal
Reinforced Plastics. AVK (Federation of Reinforced Plastics)
has also been supporting the fair right from the start.
Since 2006, its international conference has been the
opening event for COMPOSITES EUROPE. The ALUMINIUM Word
Trade Fair, which is also organised by Reed Exhibitions and
where 873 companies from 47 nations presented themselves,
was held concurrently in Essen from 14 to 16 September.
Together, both trade fairs with a total of 1,167 exhibitors
form one of the largest platforms for lightweight
construction topics.
New composites fair in China
In addition
to the European market which is growing again, the rapidly
expanding Asian market will offer gigantic opportunities to
companies from Europe in future. After the success of
COMPOSITES EUROPE in Germany, trade fair organiser Reed
Exhibitions is now also entering the Chinese market with a
new event. COMPOSITES CHINA will take place for the first
time in Shanghai from 13 to 15 July 2011.
It will be
held there concurrently with ALUMINIUM CHINA, taking over
the Essen trade fair concept of COMPOSITES EUROPE in
combination with the ALUMINIUM World Fair. China is one of
the most rapidly growing markets for fibre-reinforced
materials. Especially in the application industries wind
power (where China is the world’s largest market),
automotive, aviation and shipbuilding, demand is rising
steadily.

Comments on COMPOSITES EUROPE 2010:
“The
market for composites will develop much better than was
forecast even last year […] The composites industry has a
large potential for innovation, both with regard to products
and to services and processes.”
Dr. Elmar Witten, Managing Director, AVK
(Federation of Reinforced Plastics)
“For
us as a mechanical engineering company, composites are an
industry with a bright future. The visitors at COMPOSITES
EUROPE are of a very good quality and quite international.
More than half of the visitors at our stand came from abroad
– India, Australia, China, Pakistan and Russia.”
Thomas Haurenherm, Sales Management, Breton
Sales, Germany
“The
rise in demand is noticeable in all industries. The response
at the trade fair was better than in previous years.
Especially the combination with ALUMINIUM was interesting
for us.”
Klaus Kröger, Duroplast Sales, Röchling
Engineering Plastics KG
“All
the discussions we had were with qualified decision-makers.”
Jacqueline Claudia Kellner, Marketing &
Communication, Lectra Deutschland GmbH
“This
was our first time as exhibitors at COMPOSITES EUROPE – it
was the right decision. We are very satisfied with the high
visitor quality and numbers.”
Ulrike Exner, Teijin Aramid GmbH
“The
industry is doing fine, it is extremely dynamic. The trade
fair was a great success for us. We had a lot of enquiries
from the automotive sector.”
Herwig Krichberger, Head of Busienss
Development
“Our
expectations were fulfilled. We met a large number of
suppliers from the fields of automation and plant and
process technology at the trade fair. The crisis had hit us,
too, but now we feel the recovery.”
Frank Fetscher, Director Sales + Marketing,
Benteler SGL GmbH & Co KG
“CE
is an entirely specialist trade fair, and visitors come here
with technically challenging questions. We see a trend in
the field of renewable energies.”
Klaus Ahlborn, Technical Sales Representative,
Huntsman Advanced Materials (Germany) GmbH
“Visitor
pressure at our stand was more than strong. For us taking
part in the trade fair is worthwhile particularly because an
increasing number of raw materials suppliers are exhibiting
here. We have already booked our stand for COMPOSITES EUROPE
2011 in Stuttgart.”
Andrea Piotrowski, Manager Sales, Toho Tenax
